Mission Statement
Our mission as nursing professionals is to provide support and enhance quality in the Adult Family Home Community.
AFHNA's Code of Ethics
This Code of Ethics for AFHNA was developed as a guide for Licensed Nurse's responsibilities in a manner consistent with professional values and moral standards. They define the essentials of honorable behavior for the Nurse who works in and with Adult Family Homes. Each AFHNA member will:
- Recognize and respect the welfare and dignity of each Resident without consideration for race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, social or economic status
- Embrace and honor The Rights of Residents and potential Residents in Adult Family Homes and promote each Resident's right to self-determination
- Demonstrate responsibility and accountability in delivery of optimum care to residents of AFHs
- Practice with integrity
- Maintain professional competence
- Promote AFH standards of care through continued education
- Support political action in shaping the Washington Administrative Codes (WACs) and rules governing AFHs
- Take personal pride in their work and therefore do not accept gratuities
Adult Family Home Nurses' Association's Goals and Objectives
Create a team attitude among nurses and others working with Adult Family Homes
- Offer continuing education, seminars, and classes
- Facilitate discussion groups
- Establish a framework for mentoring
Foster the professionalism of the AFH Community
- Establish clear standards of care
- Create practice guidelines and protocols
- Develop standardized forms
- Develop a professional packet for new Providers to assist in meeting compliance
- Employ marketing and media strategies to enhance the Professional image of the AFH
Educate the Medical community and public about Adult Family Homes
- Create a speakers bureau
- Outreach to other professionals in the community
- Introduce Healthcare students to learning about AFHs
Maintain awareness and participate in the political arena
- Establish an AFHNA Legislative Committee
- Be available as a professional resource to state government
- Advocate the AFH model

Maria Jumanca

Co-Treasurer, Co-Founder, Board Member
Maria Jumanca, RN, received her nursing degree in Romania and has over 26 years of experience in healthcare services. She worked as a pediatric nurse in Romania for 10 years and as registered nurse on the cardiac floor at Overlake hospital in Bellevue for 5 years. Maria now runs Canyon Park Adult Living Centers Inc. where she and her husband have been providing quality care for the elderly since 1999. Additionally, Maria was a member of the advisory committee for DSHS in Olympia for 4 years. She dedicates herself to educating the public about the Adult Family Home industry.
Aurica Cuc

Secretary, Board Member
I am a board member and the secretary for AFHNA. I am a dedicated nurse with over 20 years of experience managing two adult family homes, where I am committed to providing compassionate, high-quality care to every resident. My background includes working in home health and private home settings, and I specialize in conducting thorough nursing assessments for new residents to ensure their needs are carefully evaluated and met. Outside of my professional life, I enjoy spending meaningful time with my family and staying active through hot yoga.
Gabriela Bureriu

In 2005, Gabriela Bureriu began her career as an adult family home provider, founding Gentle Senior Care, LLC. Motivated by her dedication to improving client care, she initially pursued a nursing degree from Olympic College. Over the years within the adult family home sector, Gabriela has been an active participant in organizations dedicated to advocating for the industry. She served as President of the Eastside chapter for four years. Gabriela's steadfast commitment to enhancing the quality of life for the elderly shines through her unwavering dedication to providing exceptional care within the adult family home setting.
Nellie Zagrean
RN, BSN
Co-Treasurer, Board Member
In 1995, Nellie became an adult family home provider and opened Cascade Home Care, Inc. Believing she would have more to offer her clients as a registered nurse, she first pursued a registered nursing degree, and then obtained a BSN degree from the University of Washington. Throughout her career as an adult family home provider, Nellie has volunteered her time in various organizations that support and advocate for the adult family home industry. She is dedicated to improving the lives of the elderly by providing high quality care in the adult family home setting and strives to heighten community awareness of the AFH as the best option for long-term care.
Carmen Moise
RN, BSN
Education Lead, Board Member
Carmen Moise completed her ADN at Lake Washington Technical College in 2010 and her BSN at Olympic College in 2012. In 2005, Carmen and her husband opened and continue to operate Bothell Way Lodge AFH. In addition, Carmen taught continuing education for caregivers for a few years. Carmen is passionate about caring for people as she lost both parents in her childhood. Carmen's mother may have survived her illness if she had a proper caregiver to help her. Her father's three-week-long coma showed her how much vulnerable people need good care and kindness. Carmen brings these experiences forward in her work as an AFH provider over these last 14 years. Her calling is to bring comfort and support to those in need. Carmen strives to continue to expand her knowledge of gerontology and dementia care in an environment of collaboration and teamwork.
Connie Marrs

Board Advisor
Connie Marrs, a Registered Nurse, has served on the AFNA board as a senior placement consultant in an advisory role for the past eight years. With over 25 years of specialization in assisting families with senior living transitions and more than 30 years of experience in the healthcare industry, her background includes roles as a Geriatric Nurse Care Manager, Home Health Nurse, and ICU/CCU Nurse.
Connie is a dedicated professional committed to helping seniors and their families identify the Adult Family Homes, Assisted Living, or Memory Care facilities that best meet their specific needs. Her extensive experience has provided her with exceptional evaluation and assessment skills, as well as a comprehensive knowledge of available resources. She remains focused on building meaningful professional relationships and contributing to the ongoing success of the senior care industry.
Lidia (Michelle) Lupse
RN
Board member
Michelle has been an adult family home provider and operating Grace Senior Care for over 25 years. During this time, she has worked in the community as an assessing nurse, nurse delegator and taught caregiving classes related to adult family home industry. She is passionate about providing quality care to the aging adults and improving community awareness about adult family homes.
